God speaks to us

go to the limits
of your longing

Big Shadows was inspired by a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Go to the Limits of Your Longing:"

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.

From "Book of Hours, I 59," in Rilke's Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, translated by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows

what is the divine
saying to you?

How do we open our ears to our soul's desires? And why should we? Spiritual direction gives us a way to explore the answers to these questions and many more that go to the core of our being and – not coincidentally - our relationship with a higher power.

Trees hug back

During a walk this morning at William O'Brien State Park I met a grand white pine with a circumference twice my outstretched arms. Most of the pinus strobus around in this area are missing their lower limbs. Not this one. I leaned into its embrace and listened to the wind hum refrains.
